Artist in Residence

Jackie Macrae

"I am a Masters student in Art and Design studio practice at Loughborough University 2011, my work concentrates on working by hand, exploring the intelligence we have in our hands through investigating the potential of drawing as a learnt skill. Predominately landscape influenced I am working towards exploring a sense of place through creating dramatic incidence in graphite, pencil and stone.

Time is an important concept within my work, in terms of time spent in a place and unveiling its history. Then being able to capture that moment in time, as though my pieces are present day monuments, reawakening something aged in the landscape.

In this age of information it is imperative not to forget our past experiences and the beautiful tactile qualities that are still to be experienced and remembered in the world around us. Layers of pencil marks and metaphor are used to engage the viewer on an inherently human level urging the viewer to look beyond the explicit.

Pinhole photography using handmade recycled cameras is another hand process that is key to my practice. The use of the pinhole allows me to distort reality of the landscape with the exposure through a tiny hole and experimenting with depth of field. The lens now acts more like a portal, the round circle is a symbol surrounded by a questionable space drawing the eye in. The photographs are works themselves, a statement against the digital that imperfections and the methodology of chance participate in the work

My work being based around hand processes has lead to the development of making my own equipment and using eco friendly techniques. I have made cameras from solely found objects such as cereal boxes and pringle cans, recycling them into usable cameras.

While I am working at St George’s I hope to incorporate my practice into some artistic workshops including, making camera’s developing photographs by hand on an on campus darkroom, stone carving, drawing and paper sculpture."

Here are some images of the artwork Jackie has created using some of the techniques she has discussed:
